35. Compile an organized list of my favorite quotes.

I'm going to go ahead and call this complete.  I have created separate documents for each category of quotation.  Within each document, the quotes are listed alphabetically by name.  I will definitely expand my lists as needed in the future, but for now, they are organized.

Here is one of my favorites and a personal motto:

"How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the strong.  Because someday in life you will have been all of these." - George Washington Carver

9. Mystery (3/10)

I watched Dial M for Murder today.  I had trouble maintaining interest at first because it seemed like they were just going to talk.  Eventually, the plot picked up and by the end, I enjoyed watching it.  The storyline itself seemed a little ridiculous to me, but certainly intriguing.

97. Do "The Gratitude Challenge."

I finished The Gratitude Challenge yesterday.  Since the last few weeks were pretty hectic, I sometimes switched the tasks that I did each day to better fit my schedule.  I found the tasks to be both fun and challenging.  Some of the tasks really make you think.  As an example of something I did, I will share Day 2's task below.

Day 2 said: "Use the alphabet as a fun and quick format for making a list of things for which you feel grateful."

Rather than try to make something up for the more obscure letters, I simply wrote several things that came to mind for some of the other letters.  At first I wasn't going to let myself put any material items on the list, but then I realized that I am grateful for those things too.  My life would be very different without them.  I think this list ends up being my life in a few words.  Without further ado, here is my list of alphabet thanks.

apple's crisp smell
books
creativity
diet coke lime
family and friends
good health
HGTV
iPod
Jesus
laughter
music, movies, and musicals
Netflix and nature's beauty
opportunities, organization, and orange juice
photographs and pianos
quotations
recipes
snow and smoothies
thunderstorms
warm house

95. Try watching 5 new or recommended t.v. shows to see if I like them too. (5/5)

Complete!
Since being on break from school I have been able to watch Flashforward, which started this fall on ABC.  I am now caught up with all ten episodes.  It returns with new episodes in March.  Mostly I kept noticing things that reminded me of Lost.  At times, I think the music is from Lost, but that would be too ridiculous.  Although I am interested to see what happens, I do not feel the need to theorize and analyze every detail like with Lost.  If you can handle weirdness and bizarre happenings, you might enjoy Flashforward

86. Find a location for my internship that I really love.

Complete!  I officially have an internship for next summer with Harrisonburg Public Safety, which is run through Harrisonburg Fire Department.  I have to complete a public health internship to officially graduate from JMU with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences: Public Health Education.  I'm excited for this opportunity because it will be unlike any place I have ever worked before.  The previous intern also got to ride on a firetruck, which sounds fun and exciting!

97. Do "The Gratitude Challenge."

I found "The Gratitude Challenge" a few weeks ago and thought it would be a good exercise to do.  Since Thanksgiving is tomorrow, I figured there is no better time to start.  "The Gratitude Challenge" lasts only 21 days and provides a task or reflection to do each day to help give thanks and look at the bright side of life.

Day 1's task is to sign the contract and make a commitment to carry out "The Gratitude Challenge."  Here is what the contract says:

The Gratitude Pledge
With a hopeful outlook, I promise to fulfill the terms of The Gratitude Challenge.  Over the next 21 days, I pledge to complete the activities on my gratitude calendar, including writing journal entries, taking photos and connecting with friends.  I promise to take note of life's little blessings and to give thanks for the relationships, experiences and opportunities that make my life unique.  From this day forward, I commit to living on the brighter side of life.

All of the instructions for doing "The Gratitude Challenge" are available at their website.  I will blog about my progress with the challenge as appropriate along the way.  Even though I am crazy busy right now, I think it will be good for me to take time to stop and appreciate the good things in my life each day.

13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (39/100)

I watched American Graffiti earlier this week.  I enjoyed seeing a very young Harrison Ford.  American Graffiti presents a coming-of-age story to which most people can relate.  I think anyone can find their high school self in one of the characters or events in the movie.  I also liked that the various stories were enhanced by the characters cruising around town in their cars.  Perhaps my favorite part was the music, which was excellent!

95. Try watching 5 new or recommended t.v. shows to see if I like them too. (4/5)

I've been watching the new V since it came on three weeks ago.  I love Elizabeth Mitchell and I'm happy to see her have her own show.  As for V, obviously it is strange.  Since I'm used to watching strange shows (LOST, Heroes, etc.), I'm probably not as creeped out by it as some people.  I certainly have lots of questions though!  I will keep watching to get some answers.  There is one more episode next week before there is a break until the spring.  I don't know that I like it enough to go back and watch the original show, but I'm definitely intrigued.

65. Attend 5 JMU events: speakers, concerts, art exhibits, etc. (4/5)

I thought it would be especially important to include my own event!  This past week was The Big Madison Public Health Event.  I helped plan the week with my HTH 458 Health Program Planning and Evaluation class.

The theme was "Safe Day, Safe Night" and the events focused on substance use, sexual behavior, and traffic safety.  My group planned Wednesday night's event where we showed the film "Making of a Hangover."

87. Take the GRE.

Complete!
I took the GRE last Friday with Diana.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  I actually liked that it was on the computer.  You find out your math and verbal scores when you finish, but the writing score comes in the mail.  I did alright, but there is always room for improvement.

Sunday, November 1, 2009

13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (38/100); 5. Gangster (3/10)

I watched Goodfellas today.  I enjoyed watching it much more than I did Pulp Fiction.  I have never really liked Ray Liotta, but I thought he was excellent as Henry Hill.  Goodfellas is based on the real life of gangster Henry Hill and I find the world portrayed in the film intriguing because it is so different from mine.  I read on IMDB that Henry Hill had to leave the Witness Protection Program after the movie came out because he went around telling people his real identity.  I don't know if that is true, but it certainly adds to the story.

96. Read 10 books for spiritual growth. (1/10)

I decided to add a new category for the book I'm reading.  I have several books related to Christianity that I want to read.  It seemed weird to count them  in the same category as novels.

I finished reading Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul this weekend.  It was written by John and Stasi Eldredge.  I had heard it recommended countless times and I finally got a copy and found the time to read.  I don't know that it had the same life-changing effect on me that others talk about, but I enjoyed reading it.  Captivating definitely gave me some things to think about.  I especially liked that stories from real women were included in the book.  I think it would be useful for young Christian women to read this book.

14. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 25 Greatest Movie Musicals. (18/25)

I watched Top Hat this morning and I absolutely loved it!  Sometimes I find it hard to maintain interest throughout older movies, but not this one.  The storyline was fantastic and so funny.  Fred Astaire was very charming.  I definitely recommend seeing Top Hat

13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (37/100); 5. Gangster (2/10)

I watched Pulp Fiction on Friday.  I don't really know where to begin.  Mostly I was shocked.  I can imagine how much more shocking it must have been to see it when it originally came out in 1994!  There were times when I found myself chuckling.  The characters were certainly multifaceted and surprising.  At times, their conversations were much more engaging than I would have thought possible considering the context of the film.  However, I can say that I will probably never watch Pulp Fiction again.

65. Attend 5 JMU events: speakers, concerts, art exhibits, etc. (3/5)

I really should have posted this last month, but oh well!  On September 5, Diana and I attended "Sites of Manhattan," a themed dinner planned by the Hospitality and Tourism Management majors.  The Festival Ballroom was transformed!  Our table was located at 14th and 5th.

Here's the hosts' description:
We are bringing New York City to James Madison University on September 5, 2009 at 6:30pm. You will get to enjoy your own personal tour as you see the "Sites of Manhattan." Come take a stroll through Central Park as you enjoy upbeat music from the jazz trio street performers, and a variety of delicious New York favorites for you to try. Then be amazed by all the colors and sites that Manhattan has to offer. You will enjoy an exquisite four course meal while being entertained by some of New York’s most famous performers such as a JMU’s own Billy Joel, Blue Man Group, and a hip Broadway Musical. This will be a night to remember as you go on a tour to see the "Sites of Manhattan".

The food was delicious!  We started with a Central Park Summer Soup which was chilled tomato soup with grilled corn, red onion, and avocado.  I had never had chilled soup before, but this was tasty!  Then we had a Big Apple Salad followed by the main course, Medallions of New York Strip Steak.  SO good!  It was served with basil mashed potatoes and sauteed summer vegetables.  For dessert, we had Manhattan Chocolate Cheesecake which was also wonderful.

Our table was conveniently located in front of the Brooklyn Bridge.  During dinner we saw several performances.  I especially enjoyed hearing "Defying Gravity" from Wicked.  JMU's own Billy Joel also sang beautifully.  This Statue of Liberty sculpture was amazing!

I have officially applied to graduate!  My application was accepted, so now I just need to survive this semester.

Week 30 Progress Report

This week is the 30th week I've been doing the 1001 Day Challenge.  I thought it would be a good time to stop and review my progress over the past weeks.  Sometimes I lack the motivation to start some of the more involved things on my list, but I'm getting there.  Mostly, it has been fun!

Days Remaining: 791
Tasks in Progress: 41
Tasks Completed: 15
   3. Animation (10/10)

   76. Finally, eat 2.5 cups of vegetables a day.
   77. Eat 1 cup of fruit a day for the first month.
   78. Then, eat 1.5 cups of fruit a day for the second month.
   79. Finally, eat 2 cups of fruit a day.

   15. Watch my set of Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals. (6/6)

New Movies Watched: 80
Books Read: 8
New Bands Listened To: 30

14. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 25 Greatest Movie Musicals. (17/25)

I watched An American in Paris this weekend while I was sick.  I always enjoy watching Gene Kelly dance.  He has such a warm, comical, and engaging presence on screen.  In An American in Paris, he plays Jerry Mulligan, an American painter struggling to make a living in Paris after the war.  While this is not my favorite musical, there are several wonderful dance sequences, especially the ballet at the end of the movie.  I learned that the ballet sequence took a month to film and cost half a million dollars, in 1951!

Friday, October 2, 2009

21. Read 10 other books. (8/10)

I took a break from my hectic life and made time to finish reading Jodi Picoult's My Sister's KeeperMy Sister's Keeper is both beautiful and tragic. The story is so compelling I'm not sure how I waited so long to finish reading it.  I don't want to give away the plot in case someone who reads this hasn't read the book.  I will say that the ending took me by surprise.  In retrospect, I should have predicted it, but I was just so absorbed in the characters and their lives.  My Sister's Keeper was made into a movie this summer with Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin, but I haven't seen it yet.

13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (36/100)

I watched Tootsie last weekend.  Dustin Hoffman plays an actor, Michael Dorsey, who has a bad reputation and can't find work.  So, he becomes Dorothy Michaels and gets a role on a soap opera.  Of course, he falls in love with his female co-star who thinks he is a woman.  Drama ensues.  Personally, I preferred Dorothy to Michael.  She was much more likable and funny.

Saturday, September 26, 2009

65. Attend 5 JMU events: speakers, concerts, art exhibits, etc. (2/5)

I saw Jimmy Carter speak at the convocation center on Monday evening.  Both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were here to receive the Mahatma Gandhi Global Nonviolence Award presented by the Mahatma Gandhi Center on the JMU campus.  I saw Desmond Tutu receive the award two years ago.

The Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir performed during the ceremony.  They were incredible!  I especially enjoyed their rendition of "Amazing Grace," Jimmy Carter's favorite hymn.  The other music during the ceremony was provided by Sarnia Mahbub Ahmad and Samrat Kakkeri.  They performed one of Mahatma Gandhi's favorite devotional songs.

After receiving awards, Former President Carter presented a lecture entitled "The Path to Peace in the Middle East."  He reviewed the progress and setbacks that have been made in the Middle East.  I loved listening to him speak!  He was such a lively and engaging speaker.  I found him to be extremely likable and funny.  (I added this picture of him on screen because the lighting on the stage whited out his face in my pictures.)

61. Continuously have a puzzle out to work on.

We have finished two puzzles in the house so far this semester.  The first was my United States puzzle.  Each state was made from license plates.  It was pretty cool.  The second was a puzzle I picked up at Acadia National Park this summer.  The puzzle was made up of individual pictures from Acadia.  It was a beautiful puzzle!  We now have another puzzle laid out and waiting to be worked on.  It is a lighthouse puzzle that I also got in Maine this summer.

87. Take the GRE.

I am officially registered to take the GRE.  Yuck!  Diana and I are taking it together at the end of October.  Hopefully, I will find some time to study for it before then!

Saturday, September 12, 2009

5. Gangster (1/10); 13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (35/100)

I watched Bonnie and Clyde this morning and loved it.  I was captivated by the story.  I thought that Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were wonderful together.  I enjoyed seeing them together and watching the relationship of Clyde and Bonnie progress.  I found them to be very enduring and wished they weren't criminals, but that was part of their charm.

32. Attempt to compile a list of every movie I have ever seen.

This is challenging because I have seen so many movies and I can't possibly remember them all.  I am up to 524 movies on my list.  I think of more every day.  I know there are a lot of obscure movies I'm forgetting that most people probably haven't even seen.  Thus, this is a work in progress.

51. Update and expand my recipe collection and book.

So this summer I wrote down every recipe I came across that looked good.  I have a ton of new recipes to try now.  I tried five of them last weekend: the Blackberry Limeade, Spicy Potato Wedges, Spinach Cheese Bake, Spinach and Artichoke Dip, and Snickerdoodles.  I love potato wedges, but this recipe was a little too spicy for me to enjoy.  The spinach cheese bake was alright.  It's not something I would want to eat often though.  The spinach and artichoke dip was delicious!  I will definitely be making that again.  Last but not least, my personal favorite, snickerdoodles!!!!  I love snickerdoodles and this recipe was awesome.  It came from Cooking  Light, so I don't have to feel too guilty about eating them!

83. Shop at the farmer’s market at least once a month while in season.

I went to the Harrisonburg Farmers' Market last Saturday morning.  I got some organic blackberries and a delicious watermelon.  I used the blackberries to make a Blackberry Limeade.  I found the recipe this summer and wanted to try it.  It was different, but tasty.

15. Watch my set of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musicals. (6/6)

Complete!  I watched State Fair last week and really liked it!  It had a perfect mix of music, comedy, and romance.  I definitely identified with Margy!  I saw the 1945 version, but my dvd set has the 1962 version as well.  I plan on watching it at some point to see how it changes.

Monday, August 17, 2009

8. Sports (3/10); 13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (34/100)

I finally watched Rocky this afternoon, despite having borrowed it from Andrea all summer. I liked it well enough, but I can't say that I have a deep love for it (Andrea). I definitely liked the second half of the movie better than the first. I had a hard time paying attention for the first bit. I also kept thinking how dark the movie was, as in literally dark. There didn't seem to be much light or sunshine. Mostly, I just liked to hear him talk. I am glad I finally found time to watch it, but I doubt I will be watching the other Rocky movies anytime soon.

94. Make my movie ticket art.

Complete! I found more movie tickets while going through a random box, so I was able to finish. I really like this unique display of something I love: going to the movies. It also makes a great conversation piece!

55. Finally frame and hang my own photography in my room.

Complete! Although this is not how I really want to hang some of my photos, it has to do for now. I can't justify spending the money for individual matted frames yet. I found this frame half-price at Michael's. The photos are 5x7. This picture isn't the greatest because of the glare, but I enjoy having a few of my photos up on the wall.

90. Paint my lamp.

Complete! After several months of changing colors and designs, I finally decided to be simple and just paint my lamp pink. I'm happy with the decision. The pink blends in nicely with the colors in my room without being too loud like some of the other ideas I had. It is also the same pink color that I painted my earring rack. I especially love that my lamp has the touch base on the bottom!

58. Pay off my credit card.

Complete! I paid off my credit card last week. Let's hope I keep it that way!

Saturday, August 1, 2009

10. Romantic Comedy (6/10)

I watched Adam's Rib yesterday. I had never heard of it before seeing it on AFI's 10 Top 10 list. It was interesting and funny. I definitely saw where more recent movies have the same storyline. I guess this is where it came from originally.

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

2. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 10 Top 10 lists. (1/10); 6. Science Fiction (4/10)

I watched Terminator 2: Judgment Day this morning. I realized that I actually have seen it before, or at least most of it. I don't really know what to say about it. It's pretty self-explanatory.

Tuesday, July 28, 2009

14. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 25 Greatest Movie Musicals. (16/25)

I watched Meet Me In St. Louis this morning. I loved it! Judy Garland was lovely and I really enjoyed the songs.

Monday, July 27, 2009

13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (33/100) and 14. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 25 Greatest Movie Musicals. (15/25)

I watched Yankee Doodle Dandy yesterday. I really enjoyed it. It was uplifting, funny, and very patriotic. James Cagney was great as George M. Cohan. I definitely recommend watching it.

Sunday, July 26, 2009

48. Make 10 pieces of jewelry. (5/10)

I made 5 pieces of jewelry this week: three necklaces and two pairs of earrings. I took these pictures with my phone just now so they are not very good, but you can get an idea.

95. Try watching 5 new or recommended t.v. shows to see if I like them too. (3/5)

I've been watching the first season of NCIS this week. My dad has watched it since it first came on. I've randomly seen bits and pieces before. I really like it. It is a great show. I plan to watch more seasons at some point when I have the time.

13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (32/100)

I watched Citizen Kane this week. It is AFI's number 1 movie on the 100 Years, 100 Movies list. I had a hard time maintaining interest in it at first. It got easier as the movie progressed, but it's not something that I would necessarily just want to watch again. That makes me question why Citizen Kane is the number 1 movie. To me, the supposed number 1 movie should be something that I really enjoy and want to watch again. Perhaps there should be two lists of great movies, one based on critical appeal and one based on general likability with the public.

Saturday, July 18, 2009

13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (31/100)

I watched A Streetcar Named Desire today with my Roku player. It was pretty intense. I guess I didn't realize the plot line before. It was nice to not have to watch it on my computer though!

91. Get a Roku player

Complete! My Roku player came in the mail yesterday! I set it up this morning and I love it! I can watch my Netflix and my Amazon Video on Demand on my tv instead of my computer now! Awesome!

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

27. Create soundtracks that define each remaining semester/summer of college. (1/5)

So I feel the need to say that the songs I chose do not necessarily represent my own feelings or circumstances during this past semester. In working on these soundtracks, I realized that I have a tendency to like sad songs best. I'm not sure what that says about me. I think it's the actual music itself, not the words, that draws me to the less than happy songs. I just love music and I listen to a variety of songs. This is really a sampling of the songs I liked to listen to the most this spring. The order is intentional; it is chronological as best as I remember. For future soundtracks, I will add songs to a playlist all along. Enjoy!

Spring 2009
1. Supermassive Black Hole by Muse
2. Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron & Wine
3. Easy to Love by Sons of William
4. Fifteen by Taylor Swift
5. Where I Stood by Missy Higgins
6. Everything I'm Not by The Veronicas
7. Break Me Out by The Rescues
8. Madly by Tristan Prettyman
9. Lift Me Up by Kate Voegele
10. Stand by Rascal Flatts
11. You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift
12. Take a Chance On Me by ABBA (but as sung in Mamma Mia!)
13. Friday I'm In Love by The Cure
14. Do You Believe Me Now by Jimmy Wayne
15. All the Above by Maino
16. Change by Taylor Swift
17. Life Boat by Miranda Lee Richards
18. Off I Go by Greg Laswell
19. Dream by Priscilla Ahn
20. Show Me What I'm Looking For by Carolina Liar

94. Make my movie ticket art.

I decided to make movie ticket art with all of the movie tickets I have kept over the years. The earliest I have found are from 2004. It's interesting to go back and look at which movies I saw. I thought it would be fun to display them as a unique personal piece. I bought a frame and I have put all of the tickets I have found so far in it. I need some more to completely fill the frame, but I like the way it looks. I'll post a picture when it's finished.

95. Try watching 5 new or recommended t.v. shows to see if I like them too. (2/5)

I've been watching season one of Veronica Mars this past week. I should finish it today. I like it. I will probably watch the other seasons at some point. I also watched the first episode of Psych last week. I really liked it. It was so funny. I plan on watching more after I'm done with Veronica Mars. Both of these shows were recommended to me by Andrea. I welcome any suggestions!

91. Get a Roku player

I ordered my Roku player today! I'm excited!

Monday, June 29, 2009

21. Read 10 other books. (7/10)

I read Janet Evanovich's new book, Finger Lickin' Fifteen, last week. It is the latest in the Stephanie Plum series that I love. If you are looking for a fun and hilarious series of books to read, these are the ones. Make sure to start at the beginning.

The last few weeks

It has been a long few weeks, but I'm trying to keep up.

2. Watch all the movies in AFI's 10 Top 10 Lists
7. Westerns (2/10)

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
High Noon

13. Watch all the movies in AFI's 100 Years 100 Movies list. (30/100)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
High Noon
The Graduate
Jaws

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was awesome; so funny! I didn't like High Noon as much, but it was interesting. The Graduate is of course a classic, but it kind of annoyed me. I've seen parts of Jaws before, but seeing it all the way through made more sense. I also realized that it's where the line "That's some bad hat, Harry" came from. I hear it after a lot of tv shows as the name of a production company, or something to that effect.

21. Read 10 other books. (6/10)
So I realized that I read He's Just Not That Into You back in April and never wrote it down. I'm glad that the movie is out on dvd now too.

66. Visit all 50 states. (35/50)
Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont

Since I went to Maine last week, I got to go to several more states. The northern states are very quaint, especially along the coast. All of the houses were big and it seemed like they all had three car garages, which I'm assuming is for a boat. It was really cold and raining for most of the time in Maine, but it was still beautiful. I saw eight moose.

I can't say that posting has been my top priority...

I can't say that posting has been my top priority the last few weeks. I've been incredibly busy with work, online classes, and my thesis. I have made time for some fun things from my list though. I have a lot to post about!

13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (26/100)
The Philadelphia Story, Psycho, Vertigo
2. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 10 Top 10 lists. (1/10)
9. Mystery (2/10)
Vertigo
10. Romantic Comedy (5/10)
The Philadelphia Story, Harold and Maude

Ok, here it goes... The Philadelphia Story has Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and my fave James Stewart. It is a crazy romantic comedy with multiple love triangles and some deception. Definitely worth seeing at least once. I rented Psycho from the local public library. It wasn't what I expected. I wasn't scared because I kind of knew what to expect as far as the whole turning mom's skeleton around in the chair thing goes (thank you Dawson's Creek). Continuing with my Hitchcock theme, I watched Vertigo today and really liked the mystery of it. Although I did get a little confused for a while towards the end. I also thought it didn't have much of an ending. It just seemed to stop. Overall, I have become very fond of Hitchcock and look forward to watching some more (and not just because of James Stewart). The other movie I watched last week was Harold and Maude, which I also got from the library. I picked it up on a whim because it happened to be there and I knew I needed to watch it. Kind of a shock at first, but I found myself growing fond of the strange, eccentric, seemingly mismatched pair. The music was good too.

21. Read 10 other books. (5/10)
In the past few weeks, I've read the first two books in Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone alphabet series: A is for Alibi and B is for Burglar. I started reading them because I LOVE Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series and these books were a predecessor to them. Even though these first ones are a bit dated, I have enjoyed them. It took me a while to get into the first one because in my mind, I compared it to Janet Evanovich and was disappointed. Evanovich is hilarious and these don't really have that. They are solid mystery/detective stories.

74. Eat 1.5 cups of vegetables a day for the first month. 75. Then, eat 2 cups of vegetables a day for the second month. 76. Finally, eat 2.5 cups of vegetables a day. 77. Eat 1 cup of fruit a day for the first month. 78. Then, eat 1.5 cups of fruit a day for the second month. 79. Finally, eat 2 cups of fruit a day.
I am considering these complete. I started working on eating more fruits and vegetables a few months ago. I meet my recommended amount almost every day now, and that's as good as it's going to get.

71. Go for a walk with a different person every month.
Since I've been home, I've walked with my mom when she takes my dog for walks in the evening. I am not feeling very strict about this goal and will just try to go on walks with people when the opportunity arises.

84. Finish my Honors Thesis.
My proposal is now complete. Yay! I'm going up next week to get signatures. I have a lot of reading to do this summer.....

32. Attempt to compile a list of every movie I have ever seen.
So, attempt is the key word here because I have seen so many movies that I will never be able to remember them all. I saw an article the other day where someone claimed it is not possible to watch more than a 1000 movies in a lifetime. I totally disagree, as did many of the people who had commented on the article. That being said, I was inspired to start making my list. I've started with making a list of the movies I own, which I needed to do anyways so I would have an updated record of what I own. It's a lot.

Well, that seems like enough. There have been some little things I wanted to work on in my few minutes of spare time, but I can't because my computer is still broken and not in my possession. Hopefully, it will be fixed soon. I'm probably forgetting something, but that's the way it goes.

9. Mystery (1/10); 13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (23/100)

I watched Rear Window with Andrea yesterday. I liked it alot. It was definitely not what I think of when I think Hitchcock. I didn't find it scary. I saw Disturbia with Shia LaBeouf when it came out; same storyline, but scarier than Rear Window. I liked Rear Window much better. Definitely worth watching!

4. Fantasy (4/10); 13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (22/100)

Sarah and I watched the 1933 King Kong on Wednesday and it was awesome! As expected, the special effects were rather comical. However, I was impressed with them for the time it was made. I definitely recommend watching this version; it's full of adventure, comedy, and general ridiculousness.

53. Bake cookies for someone twice a semester. (2/6)

I baked cookies and brownies for my Bible study last weekend to help them get through exam week. Of course, I also enjoyed having them around this week!

14. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 25 Greatest Movie Musicals. (14/25)

I watched Funny Girl earlier this week. I really liked it. Barbra Streisand was wonderful. Fanny Brice was so witty and funny and Streisand played her beautifully. One of her lines I particularly liked was "I'm a bagel on a plate full of onion rolls!"

21. Read 10 other books. (3/10)

I read Savannah from Savannah last week. Andrea gave it to me to read last year, but I never finished it. It was a cute story. I had some laughs. Savannah reminded me of myself at times.

85. Complete 20 hours of community service at Generations Crossing. (20/20)

I finished my hours at Generations Crossing on Tuesday. I loved spending time there. I hope to still go back from time to time even though my hours are complete. In the past, I have worked with active older adults. I was glad to get experience with adults who are less active and have various disabilities. The adults always seemed glad to see me and I was glad to see them. I heard many interesting stories. I also enjoyed observing the intergenerational interactions. I hope to incorporate the experience into my thesis.

14. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 25 Greatest Movie Musicals. (13/25)

I watched Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. Although I liked the movie better as it progressed, mostly I found it disturbing. The "brothers" behaved appallingly. This definitely was not my favorite musical.

I knew I did something else last week...

21. Read 10 other books. (2/10)
Last week I read Me and Mr. Darcy by Alexandra Potter. I've had it sitting on my shelf for about a year and I was having trouble sleeping so I just started reading. It was a good, beachy kind of read. A little out there, since it was set in the present but the main character kept flashing back in time and talking to Mr. Darcy. Overall, a fun read for fans of Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice.

Yesterday, I read The Choice by Nicholas Sparks. It was a typical Nicholas Sparks book, minus the fact that they actually live happily ever after. It would have been more believable if he just killed the wife. It was almost too miraculous and happy. Still, a nice read if you are looking for something that is easy and a little romantic.

23. Start or participate in a book club.
I got the ball rolling for this one last week. I'm going to work on a reading list over the summer and we will get started in the fall.

53. Bake cookies for someone twice a semester. (1/6)
I baked some cookies last week using Andes mint chips. I shared them with Andrea and Diana, so I believe this counts.

54. Have friends over for dinner twice a semester. (2/6)
I am counting this done twice for this semester. I had the Bible Study over back at the beginning of the semester. Other people have come over and eaten with me. I didn't have as much time to plan something big for this semester. I will do something more specific in the fall.

65. Attend 5 JMU events: speakers, concerts, art exhibits, etc. (1/5)
I went to see Exit 245's end of semester concert. It was awesome, as usual.

Progress from the last two weeks

As they say on Dancing with the Stars elimination shows, I will now reveal my progress in no particular order.....

15. Watch all of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s musicals. (5/11)
I watched Carousel, which I found harder to get into than the others. Although, it does have what I consider one of the prettiest Rodgers and Hammerstein songs, "You'll Never Walk Alone." Then again, it also has "June Is Bustin' Out All Over," which will very easily get stuck in your head and be the only words you remember from the song. Annoying. However, if you enjoy carousel music, you will get to hear it many times. Hence, the title.

14. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 25 Greatest Movie Musicals. (12/25)
I really enjoyed Guys and Dolls. I'm glad I finally watched it. I wish I could go see the show with Lauren Graham now. I've talked about it enough. Guys and Dolls is very funny and also has two interesting love stories. Of course Frank Sinatra is always classy, but I also really liked Marlon Brando in the movie. He plays Sky Masterson. I thought he was quite handsome, which surprised me considering what he looked like later in his life. One of his lines I liked: "It is my understanding that the Constitution of the United States allows everybody the free choice between cheesecake and strudel."

I have also updated my weekly movie watching and music listening in their original posts. I have started using a cd of the 50 Most Essential Pieces of Classical Music to guide my listening for classical music. Most of the songs I use for new bands I hear on tv shows or see as the iTunes single of the week. Usually, I don't like the iTunes singles of the week, but I have lately. They have had some fun, catchy beats.

I have also decided to postpone my read the Bible in a year and start again later. It just hasn't worked out well for me so far.

90. Add something new
I am adding my lamp painting project to my list. I have started it, but I haven't worked on it in a while. I will definitely have more time to work on it this summer.

13. Watch all the movies in AFI’s 100 Years 100 Movies list. (21/100)

I watched Some Like It Hot (1959) today. I would recommend seeing it if you haven't already. It is quite funny. Although I always have to wonder with movies like this how the other characters can't tell that the "women" are really men. Much like Clark Kent and Superman are the same person!. Come on, Lois Lane!

100. Convince 2 people to do 101 in 1001 with me.

Complete! Both Andrea and Emily have now made their lists and blogs. I'm pretty sure that's the easiest thing I had to do on my list. :)

My Timeline

Start: March 15, 2009
End: December 11, 2011

Creating a 1001 Day Project

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as New Year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
